Cladding Options Explained

Cladding is fixed onto the external walls and is constantly exposed to weather.

As standard we offer three cladding options:

Wood

1)     Accoya Chesapeake

2)   Western Red Cedar

Panel

3)   Anthracite Panel

Most woods require frequent treatment and come with a significant maintenance requirement, but we have chosen Accoya & Cedar for their stability, low maintenance and 50 years+ longevity.

1)      Accoya Chesapeake

Accoya is impregnated with a treatment giving great longevity and it's probably the most stable wood on the market.

The Chesapeake is a top surface cosmetic colour applied to the Accoya.

Every 5 to 10 years you may need to spruce up the Chesapeake colour depending on its exposure to the elements, weather and sun.

Treatment is very simple, you would simply wash down the Accoya with a brush and water, and then apply the Chesapeake colour with a brush, which is like brushing on water. So, no sanding down, simple as that.

Below is an example of Accoya Chesapeake.

For other Accoya colours see here: Accoya Colours

2)      Western Red Cedar

Western Red Cedar has natural resins which give the wood fantastic protection, it is an extremely stable and attractive wood, and ages even more beautifully.

Like all woods exposed to the sun, which are not treated with a colour, it will grey with age (look at the garden fences in your vicinity).

It's possible you may never need to treat the Cedar but if you do, treatment is very simple, a light sanding of the wood and then reapplication of the original treatment, Sansin Clear, which is watery and so very easy to apply.

Below is an example of the Western Red Cedar.

3)      Anthracite Panel

The back wall of the office (above) shows the Anthracite Panel.

Anthracite Panel cladding closely matches the external colour of door and windows and Accoya Chesapeake and complements the Cedar.

It’s a factory finished aluminium composite sheet material with a polypropylene core.

It offers a cost-effective alternative to the wood cladding especially for walls which are not seen, such as those positioned against a fence or wall, but it can be used on visible faces too.

Over time the Anthracite Panel colour will fade if it is exposed to the sun.

When configuring your office, mix walls with Wood Cladding or Anthracite Panel for an optimal cost/benefit mix.

WOOD TREATMENT, FIXING & WALL COMPOSITION

This section for the technically minded.

Like any natural product there are variation in the wood which give it its natural beauty.

Wood cladding secured incorrectly will bend and warp, and the resins in the wood can corrode the fixings. This is why we always use stainless steel fixings within the recommended fixing distances.

The Accoya and Cedar are sanded and treated on both sides and then sprayed with state-of-the-art spray machines using Sansin Wood Force which is an ultra-low-VOC, durable wood treatment, allowing the wood to weather naturally while offering exceptional water repellence and protection from blackening, discoloration, and wood rot.

It keeps the wood clean and ensures the wood ages consistently and evenly even in areas not exposed to the sun.

Cavity Circulation

We use a cavity gap behind the cladding planks, as per best practice, to allow air circulation increasing the longevity and stability of the cladding.

Breather Membrane

Again, as per best practice, he walls behind the wood cladding are wrapped in a breather membrane which give them protection against moisture ingress while allowing the walls to breath, given our offices decades of use.

Insulation

Our offices are warm even on the coldest days evening using a small 500 watt heater.

We know this directly from customer feedback.

The floor, walls and roof are insulated with 7cm PIR Cellotex Insulation Board with any gaps foamed to ensure a complete seal.

Floor

Our Offices come with a vinyl laminate floor, the ideal choice for this type of building. Other floors options can be laid directly over this.

Door, Windows & Vents

All doors and windows are PVC_U profiles and are double glazed, they are manufactured in the UK and come with a 10-year manufacture guarantee and high security locks.

All door and window frames are anthracite grey on the outside and white on the inside.

We offer two door options: a patio (sliding door) and a single hinged door.

Offices which have a sliding door can be configured without a window, but we include a vent(s) in the back wall which acts as both a trickle vent and can be fully opened, for general ventilation, the patio door can be slide open for more ventilation.

For offices with windows, we include a trickle vent, which keep the office aired when not in use.

If your ideal door, window size or position is not offered do contact us.

Materials & Build

The floor, walls and roof are manufactured in our workshop in a quality-controlled environment and then assembled at your location in a day.

C16 & C24 grade timber and OSB3 structural board is used for the structure.

PIR insulation with a thickness 70 to 90mm encapsulate the Offices providing a high level of heat insulation.

The internal walls are a factory finished aluminium & polypropylene composite sheet with a matte finish, so no decoration needed.

The EPDM rubber roof membrane has a 50-year life expectancy.

Care Instructions

The inside walls of the Offices are a composite sheet material.  We advise not to drill fixing holes in the walls if possible.

Detachable adhesives and suction hooks enable the walls to be used completely flexibly without making holes or marking them. See Accessories.

The interior walls can be wiped with a damp cloth to clean.

Regarding the external cladding. Holes should not be made in the Anthracite Panel cladding to avoid water ingress into the walls.

If fixings are used on the wood cladding always use stainless fixings, but keep to a minimum so as not to reduce the life expectancy of the product.

Choosing the gutter option under Accessories will keep your office cleaner and extend its life.

Wash down the outside occasionally.
